The old Belgian unit system was in use until 1820 when metric system became compulsory. However, the metric system was addopted in 1816 so for some time (almost 4 years) two unit systems were used i.e. old Belgian unit system and the metric system. The untis in Belgian unit system were derived from both French and German system. The old Belgian units of lenght were: perche and pied. The length of 1 [perche] is equal to 20 [pied] or 6.497 [m]. The length of 1 [pied] is equal to 0.05 [perche] or 0.32485 [m]. The relation between units for measuring length is given in the following table.
Perche |
Pied |
1 |
20 |
$$\frac{1}{20}$$ |
1 |
\begin{eqnarray}
1 [\mathrm{perche}] &=& 20 [\mathrm{pied}] = 6.497 [m]\\
1 [\mathrm{pied}] &=& \frac{1}{20} [\mathrm{perche}] = 0.32485 [m]
\end{eqnarray}
